A Daughter’s Role in Gusbourne’s Beginnings
Andrew Weeber, originally from South Africa, brought with him a deep appreciation for wine, having previously been a partner in a Stellenbosch winery. After relocating to England and settling in Yorkshire, it was his daughter, Genevieve, who played a pivotal role in his eventual decision to establish Gusbourne.
Genevieve purchased a home on the Gusbourne Estate, commuting from there to London for work. During visits, Andrew often marveled at the difference in climate between the chilly North and the balmy South. Genevieve, clad in shorts and a T-shirt, would frequently suggest a braai (barbecue), inspiring what Andrew jokingly referred to as his “braai viticultural theory”—if it’s warm enough for a barbecue, it’s warm enough to grow vines.
At the same time, English sparkling wine was beginning to gain international recognition, with Nyetimber winning Decanter’s “Best Sparkling Wine in the World” award. Inspired by this success and struck by the potential of Gusbourne’s slopes, Andrew became convinced the estate could produce exceptional English sparkling wine. When Genevieve alerted him to the fact that the estate was about to go on the market, he seized the opportunity. Following thorough surveys to confirm its suitability for viticulture, Andrew acquired the estate, marking the start of the Gusbourne story.
The decision to name the Chardonnay Guinevere is a tribute to Genevieve’s influence in this journey. Without her connection to the Gusbourne Estate and her encouragement, Andrew’s vision may never have become a reality.
A Name Rich in Heritage
The name Guinevere carries a dual significance. Genevieve, Andrew’s daughter, shares a name rooted in history, as Genevieve is a modern version of Guinevere, the legendary Queen and wife of King Arthur. The name reflects not only a personal family connection but also a nod to England’s rich cultural heritage. Queen Guinevere, an iconic figure in English mythology, symbolizes strength, elegance, and tradition—qualities that resonate with both Genevieve’s role in Gusbourne’s story and the character of the wine itself.
By linking his daughter’s name with this legendary figure, Andrew created a name that honors both the personal and cultural elements of his journey, blending his South African roots with his newfound home in England.
A Wine That Lives Up to Its Name
Like its name, Guinevere Chardonnay represents a perfect balance of tradition and modernity. Produced with meticulous care and precision, it reflects the unique terroir of the Gusbourne Estate and stands as a testament to the family ties and visionary spirit that brought it to life.
With each bottle of Guinevere, Gusbourne celebrates not only the elegance of its Chardonnay but also the story of the people and moments that made it possible—a story of family, heritage, and the enduring power of a name.
