In the Bartholomew Broadbent household, the Bloody Mary isn’t just a cocktail — it’s a staple. Brunches, holidays, Sunday get-togethers… they all start with something spicy in hand. But somewhere along the way, the brunch classic got a Broadbent twist.
Enter the Bloody Verde Mary, a fizzy, fresh take on the traditional Bloody Mary, made with the beloved Broadbent Vinho Verde. This isn’t just a clever remix. It’s become a staple in the kitchen and around the family table, celebrated for its lightness, brightness, and easygoing charm.
How It Happened
Years ago, in a moment of experimentation (or maybe necessity — who remembers?), vodka was swapped for Vinho Verde. The result? A low-alcohol, high-flavor version that had everyone asking for seconds.
Now it’s the drink of choice whenever tomatoes are ripe, the sun is shining, and the ice bucket is full.
What Makes It a Classic
- Bubbly, citrusy Vinho Verde cuts the richness of tomato juice and spice like a charm.
- Lower ABV makes it perfect for long brunches and early afternoons.
- It’s a crowd-pleaser—even for those who “don’t usually like Bloody Marys.”
How to Make It
You’ll find cucumber spears, cherry tomatoes, olives, and (always) a leafy celery stalk in our glasses. Some folks spike it with a splash of vodka. Others keep it wine-only and let the fizz shine. All we know is: once you try it, the old version might never taste the same.
Bloody Verde Mary (A Vinho Verde Bloody Mary Twist)
- Ingredients:
2 oz tomato juice (the fresher, the better) - 1 oz vodka (optional for a lighter feel or skip for a wine-only version)
- 3 oz Broadbent Vinho Verde (chilled)
- 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp horseradish
- 3 dashes Worcestershire sauce
- 2 dashes hot sauce (Tabasco or your fave)
- Pinch of celery salt
- Pinch of black pepper
- Garnish: cucumber spear, cherry tomato, green olive, or celery stalk
- Instructions:
- In a shaker or glass with ice, combine tomato juice, vodka (if using), lemon juice, horseradish, Worcestershire, hot sauce, celery salt, and pepper.
- Shake or stir gently to mix.
- Pour into a tall glass filled with fresh ice.
- Top with Broadbent Vinho Verde.
- Garnish with your favorite Bloody Mary skewers—cucumber, tomato, olive, maybe even a mini pickle.
Notes:
The Vinho Verde adds a crisp, fizzy, and citrusy lift, making this version lighter and more refreshing than the original. You can batch this for brunch: skip the vodka, mix a pitcher of the Bloody base, and top each glass with bubbly Vinho Verde.
