Elderton Wines: Celebrating Heritage, Sustainability, and Excellence

Elderton Wines, located in the Barossa Valley, has a storied history dating back to 1894 when the Scholz family first planted the vineyard. In 1916, Samuel Elderton Tolley purchased the estate and sold the fruit to his family’s winery. However, it wasn’t until 1980 that Lorraine and Neil Ashmead revitalized the vineyard, restoring it to its former glory. By 1982, Elderton Wines produced its first wine under the Elderton label, marking the beginning of its journey to become a beacon of excellence in the Barossa Valley.

Legacy and Innovation

Elderton Wines gained national prominence in 1993 after winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy, a testament to its outstanding quality. Today, the second generation of the Ashmead family, Cameron and Allister, continue to honor their parents’ legacy while expanding the vineyard’s horizons. They have acquired vineyards in Eden Valley, Greenock, and Mengler Hill, further enriching the Elderton story.

Sustainable Practices

The Ashmead family is committed to sustainability, evidenced by their certification under the Sustainable Winegrowing Australia program. This program emphasizes best practices in environmental, economic, and social sustainability, ensuring that Elderton Wines continues to thrive for future generations.

A Family Affair

Cameron and Allister Ashmead, co-managing directors, along with key team members like winemaker Julie Ashmead, winemaker Brock Harrison, and vineyard manager Peter Wild, drive Elderton’s mission of excellence. Julie Ashmead, taking the newly created position of Head of Production in 2019, oversees both viticulture and winemaking, ensuring the highest standards are met. The team’s dedication to quality and innovation has solidified Elderton’s reputation as a producer of world-class wines.
