Exploring the Journey of Spy Valley’s Winemaker: Emily Gaspard-Clark

Emily Gaspard-Clark’s path to becoming an acclaimed winemaker was anything but conventional. Her journey began on a serendipitous evening at a university career fair, where she stumbled upon the Viticulture and Oenology course. Originally intent on pursuing food science, Emily was intrigued by the unique blend of science and craftsmanship that winemaking offered. This unexpected discovery would soon ignite a passion that would shape her future.

After deciding to pivot from food science, Emily enrolled at Lincoln University, one of New Zealand’s premier institutions for viticulture. She spent her summers immersing herself in the hands-on world of vineyards, working in various regions across New Zealand. These experiences fueled her love for the winemaking process, allowing her to engage in every step, from grape to glass.

Emily’s dedication to mastering her craft led her to chase vintages across the globe. She honed her skills in vineyards in Australia, France, and Canada, gaining invaluable experience and insight into different winemaking traditions and techniques. This global perspective enriched her approach to winemaking, blending the best practices from each region she worked in.

In 2017, Emily returned to New Zealand, where she found her home at Spy Valley Wines, a renowned winery in Marlborough. Here, she quickly established herself as a vital part of the team, bringing her international experience and passion for winemaking to the forefront.

Her talents did not go unnoticed. In 2019, Emily’s skills and dedication were recognized when she won the prestigious Tonnellerie de Mercurey New Zealand Young Winemaker competition, a testament to her expertise and commitment to the craft. This accomplishment not only solidified her reputation as a leading young winemaker but also propelled her into a leadership role within the industry. In 2022, Emily took on the position of Chair of the Marlborough committee for the same competition, where she now helps to inspire and mentor the next generation of winemakers.

At Spy Valley, Emily thrives on the opportunity to work with a diverse range of varietals, embracing the challenges and rewards that each one brings. Her journey, marked by a combination of serendipity, hard work, and a deep passion for the science and art of winemaking, continues to evolve, much like the wines she so carefully crafts.
