Our Story

Inspired by the passion of his father, revered wine personality Michael Broadbent, who famously called Madeira his "desert island wine," Bartholomew Broadbent embarked on a mission to revive and redefine Madeira wine. Launched in 1996, Broadbent Madeira was born from this legacy. Michael Broadbent played an instrumental role in sourcing the finest wines and perfecting the blends, standards that are still used to craft these bottlings today.

Bartholomew Broadbent dedicated over a decade to reintroducing Madeira to the U.S. market, determined to craft a collection of Madeiras that rival the best in the world. His efforts have been pivotal in rekindling America's love affair with this historic wine, which once celebrated significant moments like the drafting of the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.

10 Year Old Sercial Madeira

Sercial is the driest of the four white noble varieties of the island. Just like our Colheitas and our Single Casks, each 10 year madeira is made the old fashioned way - the Canteiro method. Canteiro is a named derived from the support beams on the ceiling of the winery. Warm air rises so Canteiro method wines are cooked by ambient temperature, naturally. Tangy fruit, roasted nuts, minerality.

We like to believe the magic of the urban legend of how Rainwater came to be: a shipment was left on the docks of Savannah, GA, the barrels absorbed the rain and created a 'diluted' style. Whatever the truth, we love this style as an aperitif over ice or as an easy cocktail with tonic and a twists of lemon. Light toffee, citrus, acidity.

Single Cask Boal

This deep amber Madeira wine features notes of apricot, honey, burnt sugar, bourbon, and more, with a full-bodied palate of lush dried fruits, sea spray, and spices, balanced by a pleasing sweetness. Produced from Boal grapes sourced from Madeira’s western and southern regions, it underwent spontaneous fermentation halted by brandy to preserve natural sugars and 19% alcohol. Aged for 21 years using the oxidative canteiro process, it was bottled on May 23, 2019, with only 1,000 bottles from cask #117. Serve at 55°F and store corked in the fridge for months.
