Chateau Musar

About

Chateau Musar was founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar. In 1959, after studying oenology at the University of Bordeaux, his son Serge became winemaker. The civil war that tore Lebanon apart from 1975 to 1990 did not defeat Chateau Musar; Serge refused to abandon the wine, and lost only the 1976 and 1984 vintages to the war. Owing to his inspiring determination and grand passion for his wines, Serge received the inaugural “Man of the Year Award” from Decanter magazine in 1984.

Jeune Blanc

Bekaa Valley

Harvest & Vintage Notes
The first vintage of this blend was 2006 and has quickly become a wine that we can't keep in stock. Always a blend of Viognier, Chardonnay and Vermentino in stainless steel. Green apple, almonds, and a little slick.

Jeune Rosé

Bekaa Valley

Harvest & Vintage Notes
Cinsault and Mourvèdre are fermented and aged in stainless steel. A little bottle aging to let these naturally fermented wines settle before exporting. You know when you can't decide if you want red or white, but only want to open one bottle? This is your wine. Strawberry, rose petals, herbal.

Jeune Rouge

Bekaa Valley

Harvest & Vintage Notes
Always concrete fermented and aged blend of Cinsault, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. One of our 'go-to' reds. One we all typically buy for ourselves. Red and black fruit, sweet spice, earthy.

Hochar Pere et Fils

Bekaa Valley

Harvest & Vintage Notes
Incorrectly referred to as a second wine of Chateau Rouge, this wine is grown and made with its own purpose. A single vineyard field blend of Cinsault, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Fermented in concrete tanks and then finished in French oak for about 6 months. Ripe red fruits, savory, peppery.

Chateau Rosé

Bekaa Valley

Harvest & Vintage Notes
Not produced every year, but when it is, we sell out very quickly. Essentially Chateau Blanc with a little percentage of Cinsault blended in. A truly age worthy rosé. Blended in concreted before fermentation and then finished in older French oak. Tangerine, rose water, minerality.

Chateau Rouge

Bekaa Valley

Harvest & Vintage Notes
The flagship wine of the Estate. If you know Chateau Musar, you know the remarkable aging potential of these wines. A study in the living, breathing enigma that is wine. We try to keep at least four decades of this wine stateside. The youngest bottling is always 7.5 years old upon release. Blackcurrant, leather, delicate spice.

Chateau Blanc

Bekaa Valley

Harvest & Vintage Notes
Native Lebanese varietals of Obaideh and Merwah always make up this beauty of a blend. Chateau Musar Blanc is always harvested after the Rouge with inexplicable acid development with the longer hang time. Blanc can also outlast Rouge in longevity once bottled. Fascinating wines, period. Preserved lemon, marcona almonds, butterscotch.

Levantine de Musar

Bekaa Valley

Harvest & Vintage Notes
Levantine de Musar is a unique blend of Cabernet, Cinsault and Tempranillo, hand harvested from Musar’s organic vineyards in West Bekaa Valley. The name refers to the wine’s source, the Levant, a region centered around modern Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, and Jordan. The palate reveals fascinating tannins and depth while the nose is still shy but will develop over time.

A quadruple distillation of all grapes used in wine production at the winery. Aniseed is added during the third and forth distillations.
