Our Story

Dr. Hermann, the Riesling estate in Mosel Valley, Germany has more than 9 hectares of vineyards all managed by Christian Hermann. Winegrowing has been a tradition in the Hermann family for several hundred years. The estate was created in 1967 when the renowned Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben in Ürzig was divided. In the following years, the vineyards were expanded. The Hermanns specialize in Riesling grown on steep rock slopes. All of their vineyards grow exclusively on old, ungrafted Riesling vines which deliver the most complex regional wines.

After attending Bernkastel-Kues University to study winemaking, Christian worked for many legendary German producers including Dr. Loosen, Kerpen, Willi Schäfer, Mönchhof and Dr. Weins-Prüm. His winemaking philosophy is that quality starts in the vineyard with restrained pruning, hand harvesting, and natural, meticulous cultivation of vineyard soil. The result are beautiful, elegant wines from some of the most famous vineyard sites in the world.

Dr. Hermann specializes in Riesling grown on the steep, rocky slopes of the famous vineyards of Erdener Prälat, the iconic terroir of the Mosel and planted with original root stock Riesling up to 100 years old, Erdener Treppchen, across the Mosel River from the small town of Erden known for its very steep slope (Treppchen is little staircase in German and refers to the stone steps built into the hillside to help workers reach the vines) and Ürziger Würzgarten, a site with very red sandstone and slate soils producing wines with exotic, spicy aromas, tropical fruit flavors and a mesmerizing earthiness.
